If someone goes through a background check and goes through gun safety training, then they should be able to carry a weapon. Those aren't the people I'm worried about. A criminal isn't going to register his gun.

We should have tougher gun control laws that keep guns away from criminals and the insane, however. And gun dealers that violate the law need to be prosecuted more seriously. Fifty seven percent of all the guns sold to criminals are sold by one percent of the gun dealers. They fail to run background checks or sell large numbers of guns to traffickers who then resell them on the street. Due to weak laws and lack of enforcement it can take an average of 11 years for authorities to order one shop to stop selling firearms. For example, from 2003 to 2005, law enforcement agencies reportedly traced 1,424 guns that were used in crimes back to Trader Sports of California. The store had been investigated since the 70s, but only last year was forced to leave the firearms business.

Take a look at Austrian laws We have very strict gun laws and very few shootings Never heard of a drive by shooting in Australia It is even against the law for an U/18 to bye a knife with a long blade
At least i know if i go out at night the likely hood of being shot is very slim. Criminals only have guns to use on other criminals not on innocent people out doing there shopping. Yes if some one else had a gun they could of shot the shooter and if some one else had a gun they to could of shot the second shooter
What a mess your laws and your rights have created Look how maney people move to Australia becouse it is a safe country ???

No, no way, Jose. "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns."
One thing a lot of people do not seem to know is that there are still people who make their own guns, make their own powder, make their own bullets. There are no serial numbers, no registration, no way to trace the guns or spent ammo.
Any one who has taken Machinery 101 could make a simple gun; while it would probably not be accurate at a long range, the overwhelming majority of shootings are close, if not point-blank, range.
What would make a big difference would be for the cops to enforce the laws and for the judges to throw the book at criminals. Another problem: some little child taking a water pistol or cap gun to school and being kicked out of school. Double standards and assinine enforcement does not help the situation.

You need to ask yourself, is it against the law to kill people? Is there are harsher law on the books than 1'st degree murder? You can see the laws we have didn't stop that crazy bastrd so what would another law do? He would find a gun somewhere else or just use a car to drive over everyone instead. I'm not a big fan of guns either but I know we live in a free country and people should have the right to own them responsibly. Guns don't kill, the people do.

I believe in the right to own arms. However we need more restrictions and control.

During the Brady Ban ( the horrible years when guns were hard to get) I bought an Mack-90 (AK-47) assault rife at a gun show 100% legally. I was 22 years old. It took me 15 mins to clear the back ground check. I went to Wal mart and bought my ammo.

In less the 1 hour I had an assult rifle.

This is a problem!!!

There is no quick fix... If you made all guns illegal right now for 50 years there would still be guns crimes or longer.

I guess the guy that said out west there is more guns so there is less gun crimes. Tell that to my cousin that was shot(he was wounded) in OR in a school shooting.

Neb. has a very high Gun per capita ratio... More guns does not mean more safe!!!

On the contrary, I have lived out west most of my life and you don't have Mall shootings where they are afraid someone will return fire. We have many gun laws that are not enforced now. What makes you think adding more will help?

No, in fact...if someone in the mall had been carrying a firearm, they might have saved a few lives.

Gun control in England (1988) didn't work. As soon as they made guns illegal for everyone, crime went up. Why? Because the criminals were the only ones with guns!

Per capita Washington DC has more gun violence than any other city in the US and you are not allowed by law to own any gun. On the other hand about 12 years ago a Florida made it law that you MUST own a gun. Crime has dropped dramatically. If you were a criminal you would be less afraid if you knew your victim does not have a gun. Criminals can always get guns.

Hi,

No. In my country there are many types of prohibited weapons but if I want them I can get them (at an inflated price).

Unfortunately you cannot legislate against insanity and those using guns for crime do not worry about prohibitions or registrations. You have to change the people's way of thinking, and instill moral values.

Not unless the law/s were actually enforced (ie metal detectors and security officers at every entrance), which will probably not happen soon. Just because a new law makes it illegal for you to carry a gun into a mall doesn't mean you wouldn't do it if you really wanted to harm someone.
