It was one of the most exciting cities in the world at the time. It was also gritty, dirty, vermin-infested and overcrowded. In drawing rooms of the rich, piano legs were covered in fabric lest the women swoon from the suggestion of sex (bare legs). Yet, in the lower classes there was no modesty (or little) as there was little room or time for modesty. Child mortality was high, and pestilence widespread.. Amond the wealthy, young children were sent off to boarding school and rarely seen by their parents. A true study in contrasts.

It was characterized into several classes, for example the aristocrats who were very wealthy and ran everything politically (only 3% of the population). The population was around 8 million (don't quote me on that it's a guess) and a large amount of people were stuck in the slums. You can probably guess from the name of the era that Queen Victoria was in power at this time.

The social structure (high --> low) went something like this in the rural:
Aristocracy --> Rural Artisans --> Yeomanry (farmers) --> Tennant farmers --> Agricultural Labors

England is a hierarchial society with very different ranks of wealth, status and power. There is a general notion that hierarchy is natural (god-ordained)

Umm...that was a whole bunch of random info thrown out at you. If you were more specific with what you wanted to know about, I may have been able to be of more help...
