I will be looking for an apartment with a 1 bedroom or studio for no more than $1200, Do you think it is realistic? Where in queens would u recommend that is safe and near trains? I AM NOT INTERESTED IN JAMAICA QUEENS!

I HAVE NEVER LIVED IN NYC. So, I can't help you, except to say that yes, rent will eventually increase. On this you can be sure. Unless you find a rent controlled building, which isn't impossible. Enlist the services of a realtor...you may have to pay a small fee but you can probably get better contacts and you have someone to negotiate rent for you if the price is flexible.

Good apartments are premium priced. In NY, you are fortunate (maybe) that there is rent control. That being said, most will go up, as does the economy. I'm not from NY, so I can't tell you if your price range is reasonable or not. You might want to start doing a little comparison shopping now. Rental agents and realtors have open houses from time to time, and since you know you want a place convenient to trains, you might want to ride out some weekends to spot potential places, then contact the agent, and get on their waiting list. Of course, you could watch the obits for possible openings in areas you find satisfactory, but you have to be quick for that.

I live just outside of Queens...in Nassau County. Recently, due to the large amount of foreclosures on homes in the area...rental rates have been skyrocketing. So unless the housing market stabilizes...expect rental rates to continue to rise. As far as what areas are nice...can't really say since I think they are all pretty bad.
