Unlocking the taskbar just made the vertical wider.

unlocking it was a good start.
click on an unused empty spot on the taskbar...hold the button down while you move the mouse to the bottom of the screen (where it used to be). you should see a line that outlines where its going to drop. then let go of the (left) mouse button.

this sounds odd - ive done the same thing, accidentally made it go vertical, but as much as you try to drag back to horizontal, it just wont... the method i use is to hold the space bar while you click an drag, worked for me last time.

Click on it and hold. Drag it down to the the bottom/horizontal area. release.

I left click and it change back to horizontal.
