A LOT of Pats fans outside of New England didnt even know they exsisted before 2001. You will find that in sports, there are so many bandwaggoners, its unbelievable. Most bandwaggoner Patriots fans were probably Dallas Cowboys fans during their 1990's dynasty. The Cowboys and 49ers were 2 of the, if not the 2 winningest franchises in the 1990s. I remember when everyone was a fan of one of those. They dropped off during the late 90s, and their bandwaggoners picked up on another bandwaggon.
You will find this in other sports too, for example, the los angeles lakers dynasty from 4-5 years back. It happens everywhere, and its something that will always be present.
The Patriots werent a consistent winning franchise during the 80s and 90s. They had one super bowl run in 1985, which ended up in a blowout to the Chicago Bears. From 1988-1993, the patriots were one of the NFL's worst franchises. In 1990, they went 1-15. Bill Parcells was hired in 1994, and he got the pats into a regular playoff team from 1995-1997. They won the AFC in the 1996-1997 season, but lost to the Packers in the superbowl. Parcells went to coach the jets, and pete carroll(USC coach) had 3 so-so years from 1997-1999, making the playoffs in the 1997 and 1998 season while going 8-8 in 1999. Carroll was fired and Belicheck became the coach in 2000, going 5-11 with Drew Bledsoe as their QB. Bledsoe got hurt on week 2 of the 2001 season, Brady came in, and the rest is history. I think a lot of the pats bandwagon fans came from the 2001 season after 9/11. it seemed patriotic to root for the "Patriots". This year the bandwaggon has really increased as the Pats look unbeatable. if they start having loosing seasons down the road, the bandwaggon will jump off and go elsewhere.

i have lived in new england for 23 years (new hampshire), and I have proudly donned my patriots gear since i was a little kid. I got pictures of me in full pats uniform when I was 6, old school logo and all. And yeah they sucked back then, but I still always loved them. By the way, there are only like 15 million people in New England, and they all LOVE the Pats. An we aren't going to remember this pathitic little question from a colts, or steelers or whatever fan, when we hold up that super bowl trophy.

well after nomar left boston the people needed another crush and johnny damon just wasn't doing it for them, but then tom brady came along and now hes the dreamboat that all boston wacks off to!!!! pats fans aren't picked on because of the team but because of how they love the when they win. when the pats sucked no one picked on them because it was bed enough to watch a sucky team. but now because they are winning, the redsoxs fans come out of there shells and brag about the pats. if you like the pats since 2001, then im sure you love the redsoxs too since 2004. boston fans are fake as hell.

Oh don't worry! These Saint/Charger/Cowboy/Colt/Patriot*** fans will suddenly realize that they are really Colt, Steeler, Charger, Jaguar, Cowboy, or Packer fans when the Patriots*** flame out in the playoffs.

it has nothing to do w/ being a bandwagon fan,u jus get excited about your team again. and the last time the Pats sucked was in the early 90's. they made it 2 the super bowl in 96,won the super bowl in 01,03,04,and have the best shot to win it again. I mean im a die-hard celtics fan but last year it was hard to watch, then they made all the moves in the off season and u get excited to watch them play

It's the bandwagon fans. Any good team will have them, and us true fans will be like "I stuck by my team when they were 2-14 back in 1990 or around then, now take that Patriots jersey off!"

well like a lot of posters said.....this is totally how a lot of fans are....loyal when the team is winning...so dont just make it like its patriots fans....and sorry but NFL counts on this....if it wasnt for bandwagoners then they wouldnt make any money...ppl like winning teams...thats all there is to it....my dad has been loyal fan since the beginning..but i think he is a little senile you know? not many ppl have been loyal for that long!!!! i have been half assed loyal cuz well i didnt want to let my dad down..but it was embarrassing for years to root for new england..again i did cuz i felt i had to...its soooo much easier these days...actually in some ways it isnt....cuz outside of new england everyone hates us...and since i grew up outside of new england i have a lot of friends saying WTF???? but hey...it is what it is! :-) GO PATS!

its the samething with every fan of a team.
if your team sucked, you wouldn't say a word,
but once they start making noise,
so do you.
it works like that all the time.

Just like you dont see much people watching your team's game when they suck.
Except the Packers, because there are really nothing much to do in Wisconsin.
