To put it simply, deterrence. See, the United States opened a Pandora's box when it created the atom bomb. Since then, other powers have also obtained nuclear weapons, some friendly to the United States, others not. Therefore, in order to diminish the possibility of hostile powers from using nuclear weapons on the U.S, we need a capability of retaliation or a first strike capability, if necessary.

They're leftover from the cold war. You know, Mutually Assured Destruction. Since that time, other countries have acquired nuclear weapons. Some are our friends, some not. Don't forget, Russia still has lots of nukes, and aren't acting very friendly towards us right now.
Look at it like this, if you're angry with me, and you have a knife and I have a shotgun, are you likely to try to attack me?

Because Albert Einstein, being an extreme pacifist himself, was intelligent and wise enough to realize that it was absolutely necessary for the US to attain nuclear weapons before Hitler.
Then Russian spies stole Pandora's Box for Mother Russia.

Because the only defense against the nuclear weapons that other countries have is our own nuclear arsenal. The only true defense against nuclear attack is mutually assured destruction. If they nuke us, we'll nuke them!
Kinda sucks doesn't it.

It's called deterrence, look it up.
Which, in a nutshell, means that other countries know about the size of our arsenal and that alone prevents them from using them on us - with the knowledge that if they should do so, they face annihilation in retaliation.

Since America is prone to not using them, it keeps the other countries who have them honest. And it protects our allies from psychos like Ahmadinejad.
