a large piece of copper placed over an iron nail vs a small piece of copper.. will that increase the rate of corrosion or not?

I would figure no, but honestly can't think of a reason why. because isn't it the iron that's being oxidized, losing electrons, so a bigger piece of copper wouldn't make it lose electrons faster would it?

Because of the electromotive series, copper will accelerate the rusting of steel. A big piece of copper will accelerate it more than a small piece.

the large copper would rust faster because of its larger surface area

i think it not, same reason as yours...the iron nail still same...but i think the rate of corrosion is affected by surrounding condition...the present of air and water
