Shakespeare is generally considered to be the greatest writer in the English language, and I certainly don't disagree. However, as tallygirl points out, Shakespeare was a playwright, not a novelist.
I wouldn't say there's one person I can call "the greatest novelist of all time," but here are a few very famous, very highly thought of, very influential writers.
Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice, Emma), James Joyce (Ulysses, Finnegan's Wake), Feodor Dostoevsky (Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov), George Elliot (Middlemarch, Silas Marner), Charles Dickens (Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities), and Leo Tolstoy (War and Peace, Silas Marner).

I don't know that there is only one great book writer. And to Joseph, Shakespeare was not a book writer, he wrote plays. Very different from a novelist.
My favorite novelist is Charlotte Bronte. But what do I know?

I think there are many, but to name a few of my favorites...
Charlotte Bronte, Emily Bronte, Jane Austen, Beverly Lewis, V.C. Andrews (although you would be safer reading her older stuff rather than the newer), Shakespeare, & Edgar Allan Poe.

i'm a die perplexing technological know-how Fiction and fantasy Fan The e book that started out this variety replaced into "The Hobbit", the precursor to the "Lord of the jewelry" trilogy by potential of JRR Tolkien. i could say that "commencing place" by potential of Issac Assimov is up there as admired Sci-Fi novel. I examine for leisure and rest, so after hard maximum Sci-Fi, I now examine fairly some Westerns. In that variety you won't be able to beat "The Sacketts" or something by potential of Louis Lamour. yet as quickly as I had to %. one e book as my admired it may be "The company" by potential of John Grisham.
