I don't follow football much but I am just wondering if being the best player in college football will mean you will get picked high in the draft. Which is valued more? Also among the Heisman finalists this year, who would you choose as your top pick?

Thanks!

Why aren't they usually picked very high? I thought getting the Heisman meant they were pretty good...

The only people that winning the Heisman helps are those that do not fall under the "typical" size for their position. Troy Smith is an undersized quarterback, without winning the Heisman he probably wouldn't have been drafted. The same can be said for Jason White from Oklahoma. Without the Heisman he wouldn't have even been given a shot. Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart fall under "typical" size. When non-quarterbacks win the Heisman it gives them a much better shot to be picked very high in the draft.

Actually winning the Heisman has nothing to do with where you're going to be drafted. In fact a lot of Heisman winners never play in the NFL or play very long should I say. Look it up, it's interesting reading...try Heisman Curse it should bring up some oddities.

If I could vote, I'd vote for Colt Brennan. I think he's good and should have won it last year. If not Brennan I'd like McFadden to take it home. Tebow will probably win it though.

No. Troy Smith was picked in the 5th round after winning. It depends on your "stuff" and how the NFL scouts/coaches see you as a fit for their team/tactics. Also your physical build and how the scouts think you would do. (Being a QB in the draft also goes against you even if you won the Heisman since many teams already have an established QB) Winning the Heisman is about being the best player in college this year and i would vote D-Mac slightly over Colt although I do think Colt Brennan with his passing arm and accuracy would stand a nice chance to succeed in pro football!

As said above, there are a lot of heisman winners that don't get drafted high, or even play at the next level. Just because someone is great in college doesn't mean that they will be great in the pros. Archie Griffin was the only two time heisman winner, and he didn't have a great pro career, but that doesn't mean he wasn't a great college player. Same with Danny Wuerful and many others.

Usually but, not always.
Charlie Ward, was a highly touted Quarterback at Florida stae, a few years ago. He won the Heisman then, proceeded to announce that He would only like to play partial seasons so, He could also enjoy His other love (Basketball), on a proffessional level. He didn't get drafted and, wound up with the KNICKS.
the funny part? He later wondered aloud to the media, why no NFL team wanted a part time, highly payed Heisman Trophy winning Quarterback.

Not always. Troy Smith won the Heisman by a landslide last year and he was picked in the fifth round. Sometimes you are great in college, but dont have what it takes to be a successful pro. Usually its a size thing.

I would go with D Mac for Heisman.

it's supposed too, but it really doesn't. Troy Smith was picked late in the draft, Reggie Bush went really early but as far as recent heisman winners, that's about it. Most QBs who win the heisman don't even get drafted first as i stated already

nfl scouts don't follow politics at all.. they're trained and the best in their business to recognize the best talent for their team.. look at reggie bush and mario williams last year.. every1 thought houston was crazy but they felt williams was a better fit for them and so they drafted him over a heisman winner reggie bush.. also just to elaborate supposed the heisman winner was a runningback yet most ppl in the top ten had a young franchise runningback.. they wouldnt draft him despite being arguably the best player in college last year.. they're more concerned with whos gonna help their system of offense or defense improve.. not just the best player

Not really, just look at Troy Smith who won the Heisman last year. He didn't go until really late. Good question though.
