Sonnet 30 (Fire And Ice)
by Edmund Spenser

My lover is like ice and I am like fire
How comes her coldness is very strong
and does not melt exposed to my fire
instead her coolness becomes colder the closer I come?

Or how comes my hot fire
is not delayed by her frozen cold heart
instead my desire burns the more
and my feelings increase even more?

What kind of miracle can be seen
Fire that melts everything is hardened by ice
and ice that hardens all as cold as stone
alas uses a strange method to control fire

That is the nature of passionate love
that it can change the natural state of everything.

*Of course the poem uses figurative language and the poet is basically wondering how his lover is becoming colder even as his desire for her increases. In fact the more he desires her, the colder her interest in him becomes.

Marvelous. I love the wording, the theme, the phrasing. A concept and caution I have not heard phrased so delicately and poetically (this is where Synopsis should jump in with five or six examples of fine poetry I've missed). I love the explanation of "endured the scrolls," an expression I had not heard before but would have googled. Psychological research shows that people "fall in love" more quickly during times of turmoil, war, or intensely demanding situations (we called it "love in the foxhole" during graduate school). But true love must endure those quiet comfy moments of stillness and tea, those fond looks during strolls through the garden, and cannot be defined by extremes. I Abused spouses are often thrilled by the roller coaster of anger and contrition. The heartfelt confessions of total love (and "why do you make me act this way") and roses and kisses the following day apparently are worth the bruises and fear. Your sonnets, each by each, flow easier and dive into deeper depths. I'm glad I didn't miss this one. (With Yahoo acting up, I've just been deleting).
