practice by doing local acting jobs, even for free, and take any classes you can. watch how actors you admire handle their parts and how they get into and stay in character.

You should try to find a nearby theater class. Taking theater classes doesn't really give you the same experience that being in a show does, but a good theater class will definitely give you a good brushing up, and you might even learn something you didn't know.
Also, being in shows is good experience for brushing up. You might try auditioning for community theater shows rather than bigger productions if you just want to brush up. And if you don't get in, auditioning is a big part of acting and is a good experience.
