When they ask for it (either by word or deed) and are over a year preferably more.
Only side sleepers benefit from (standard) pillows to keep the spine straight. Back and tummy sleepers do not. And I have yet to meet a toddler that sleep in one place during the night -but that could just be me.

Actually I just gave my baby a pillow 2 nights ago, basically for the same reason. She fell asleep on my bed, on my pillow and when I went to put her in her bed she started fussin so I put that pillow in there and she went straight to sleep. And now she hasn't been fussy when I first lay her down at night. Maybe it's more comfortable or just that they feel closer to us. My daughter is 18 months old. It really depends on how advanced he is, will he wake up if he can't breathe or if he is uncomfortable, if so I am sure he is fine with a pillow. Well Goodluck!

most of what i have read says that until a year old the child should not have anything in their crib that they might be able to get wrapped up or suffocate on that includes, blankets, pillows and stuffed animals. the baby really doesn't need a pillow until it is big enough to sleep like a big kid probably around 1 1/2 or 2. talk to your doctor to make sure.

Well personally, in my daughter's crib she doesn't have a pillow.
But when she sleeps with me (it's just so much easier so I do it often, haha) she sleeps on a pillow.
She is only 4 months old.
(I'll probably get a lot of thumbs down for this but I don't care, she looks comfy and sleeps better thru-out the night with a pillow!!)
I would say at least a year, since that's what most people recommend.
However, as long as your baby doesn't roll in his/her sleep, I think you can put a pillow in there anytime (remember--always on their backs.)
My daughter doesn't roll in her sleep. She doesn't even move unless she wakes up, ha. That is why it doesn't worry me to allow her to have a pillow.
I would basically say, if your child rolls or moves a lot, then don't give them a pillow until they are one year or older.
If they are pretty immobile like mine, I would say there's no harm in giving him/her a pillow.
=)

I gave all four of my kids pillows around 10 months. When they can move around and roll freely without any problems then they should be safe enough with a pillow.

Definitely past a year old so they are not at risk for SIDs. I just now gave my 2-year-old a pillow to sleep with. Not because I thought it was dangerous beforehand but she sleeps on a cot at daycare and I thought she looked uncomfortable...then she wanted one at home.

Once they move into their own bed. Until then, they probably move around too much to really need a pillow (and it is a risk for smothering)

Whatever age (at least after they can lift their head. I suggest a year to be safe) Dont get a fluffly big pillow. A nice flat one would be nice for them.

I think that it is safe to give your baby a pillow at the age of 2 because you don't have to worry about it sufficating or hurting its neck!!!!!!!!

please wait until your baby is about 24 months old...under a year is way too young.. babies in cribs don't need pillows and fluffy things in there ..just be safe and remember back to sleep is best for your baby
