Babylon was a city of ancient Mesopotamia, the ruins of which can be found in present-day Al Hillah, Babil Province, Iraq, about 85 kilometers (55 mi) south of Baghdad. It was the "holy city" of Babylonia from around 2300 BC, and the seat of the Neo-Babylonian Empire from 612 BC. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Babylon is mentioned in Genesis as the location of the Tower of Babel. According to Genesis 11:1–9, humankind, after the deluge, traveled from the mountain where the ark had rested, and settled in "a plain in the land of Shinar." Here, they attempted to build a city and a tower whose top would be in the Heavens, the Tower of Babel. The attempt to build the city of Babel with its tower, caused God to respond. He confused the language of the people, ultimately halting the project, and scattered them across the earth. In Gen. 11:9, the name of Babel is etymologized by association with the Hebrew verb balal, "to confuse or confound":

An ancient city called Babylonia or Babylon, famous for it's wealth, extravagance and pursuit of sensual pleasures.
Writers will sometimes reference it to indicate materialism and earthly pleasure seeking, where it is often referred to metaphorically, as in the "whore of Babylon"the book of Revelation. The Imperial city of Rome was called Babylon by it's critics. And sometimes it's used to describe New York City today.

It's not as old as anything prehistoric, but it does predate the Eyptian dynasties. It's a city kingdom that was in the middle east. Very old. The place wasn't a desert back then and had a trade route going past it.
