For the last two days I have been smelling this horrible stink in my living room. I have narrowed it down to my living room heating/ac vent, it's HORRIBLE!!!!! We are unable to see what is causing the stink, thus unable to get to what ever is at the root of the problem. Anyone know how to get rid of such a stink? Keep in mind this is INSIDE of a heating/ac vent, so when the heater kicks on, the smell fills the room. *puke*

ETA- In order to find out what is causing the stink, we would have to rip apart insulation.. It's not something that is easily accessible.

IF you have flexible ducting in the ceiling it is quite common for mice or rats to get into the duct and get trapped. They die and the stink starts.

Over time the smell will go away on it's own but that is about the worst option.

Since it is just this one vent that has the smell you can try shoving a long hose attached to a shop vac up there. There is a good chance you will suck it up. Most ducts are round and dead things fall to the bottom of the duct so the vac hose may suck it up.

If you decide to hire somebody ask them if they plan to tear the ceiling apart or use a camera and vacuum to find the carcass.

you need to call a rodent removal company...the smell is horrible ,the only way to remove the smell is to remove the dead rat.. I worked for a very nice furniture store and we got rats in our ceiling...this company came in an put out traps. It only angered the rats when they were traped...we could (as well as customers) hear them dragging the traps around in a very angry fit until they died and then the fun began!! Good Luck to you!!

If you are sure it's coming from the HVAC ducts, you need to call one of the duct cleaning services. They can sweep it for you. Afterward, you need to find where the animal got in from. HVAC systems are closed systems or should be. You have an entry somewhere and if you don't seal it, you will have the problem reoccur

Baking soda in bulk. Several BIG boxes, open and set out in the immediate area.

either get someone to find out what's causing the stink or do it yourself (if you really want to) in the meantime, you can use febreeze (or other air freshener) and scented candles and incense to get rid of the stink
