I am not sure, but I do know that my children were raised with the reading of the Christmas story and Jesus' birth before we read "The Night Before Christmas". But I think even kids up to ten care more about the presents. I was raised in a very religious family and we attended church not only every Sunday for church and Sunday School, but also on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and I remember still caring more about the presents when I was young.

No, I don't. I teach basic computer skills at a small Christian school to grades 2-8. Nobody else cares anymore. My sister has 3 GREEDY, SPOILED little cretens.
I am willing to bet that about 60-65% of those kids in the age group you gave, haven't got a clue about the REAL Christmas!

It is not necessary by the children that Christmas time is the birth of Jesus Christ because it is not the true birth date of Jesus Christ. It is not good to say lies to children. At their age of maturity, they will come to know whether you like it or not that the birth of Jesus is not December 25. Don't allow yourself that your children be ignorant about the true birth date of Jesus. Tell the truth about it.

The real question is whether they know that December 25th was the date chosen by early Christians to conveniently coincide with the pagan celebration of the Winter Solstice, which was then celebrated by Romans as the birthday of the invsible sun god, Mithras?

they don't probably, until they are older...
you do know that according to the Bible, Jesus was probably born in the spring or summer, right? (Something to do with the shepards)
when rome became christian they made saturnalia chrisitanized so they could still celebrate the winter festival... and of course attributes of yule and such are in the holiday today. Easter's the same way, except christmas actually got a christianized name

Those who have parents of strong christian values, then they will know. Up to the parents to teach the value of christmas not the public at large.

Christmas is NOT Jesus' birthday. That was the excuse that Christians used to slap a holiday in place of a Pagan celebration, in order to demonise that faith's celebration.
