A gift card would probably be the best thing...maybe to a restaurant that he likes in that area, or to a store that has stuff he likes. You could also try making him "New Year's Eve" basket/kit--my friends and family LOVE them. Basically, it's a basket with everything for NYE at home (or at a hotel, if they're going out and staying somewhere), and you can scale to your own budget. Get a nice basket or box at a craft store (one the recipient can use later), and fill with stuff for New Year's Eve. I put a bottle (small or regular) of champagne or sparkling cider, a couple of champagne flutes (either plastic or real), nuts, candy, cheese, sausage, smoked salmon, crackers, cookies, etc... etc... whatever kind of nibbly things they would like, then put in a couple of noise makers, some streamers, some hats and horns. I also usually hang an ornament on the handle (something personal).

Or, look at http://www.heifer.org/ ...It's an organization that helps impoverished countries by supplying them with "seed" animals, seeds for planting, etc...to start farming, with the agreement that they will share the wealth with their neighbors by giving them the first offspring of their animals, which means that one small gift can help an entire community or village. You can "buy" a flock of chicks for $20, and there are many gifts on the website from $10 up to the thousands. This is a very unique and meaningful gift, especially for someone who is interested in the environment and ending hunger and poverty. A family member received one of these gifts a few years back, and was awed by it--it started a chain reaction within the family of donating to this organization in the form of a gift to someone else, and every recipient has been awed by the gift!

Good Luck & Merry Christmas!

Do you know what kind of things he's interested in? If you do then I would get him something related to his interests. I do think a gift certificate would be a good idea because then he could pick out what he wanted.
