My uniform has a leather cod-piece, so I'm pretty proud when it stands out in a crowd.

Why would it be degrading? If you are doing a job that requires you to wear a uniform, then why not be proud of the uniform. If you are ashamed of your job, perhaps you should rethink what you are doing. Personally, I believe that anything worth doing is worth doing well. You should always take pride in what you do. The way you perform a task is certainly more important than the nature of the task. So, if the uniform is a part of it... and you do it well, then the uniform should be a matter of pride.

It depends on whether you are proud to be working for whatever organization is causing you to wear a uniform, so it's different for everybody. If you hate the reason and are forced to wear a uniform, it can be seen as degrading, but it can also be seen as belonging to a cohesive, efficient, and really awesome group of people that make a difference in the world in some way. It's all about your point of view.

That would depend on the type of uniform you are wearing as to what feelings it would evoke. If it were a prison uniform it may well make you feel degraded.

Uniforms are hierarchical in themselves as if you think of military uniforms, your status is clearly stated by your uniform.

Even school uniforms can be degrading if you take them in that context as senior school wear different things to junior school to denote the status of the wearer.

It would depend upon the wearer as to whether they do so with pride or not.

Depends if you associate yourself with that uniform. If you're proud of the marines and what they stand for, then you'd be proud to be associated with them. It's a part of your identity.

However, if you were a janitor for example, your uniform carries connotations, which you don't like to have. In that case it's degrading.

Really is whether you connect your identity to the uniform.

It's determined by the situation you're in.

If wearing a uniform was against your will, chances are that it's degrading.

And the rest is vice versa.

I proudly and humbly salute all our courageous service men& woman. What a shame more of our young people cannot make the same high grade. Ah well I guess they are happy rolling around in the gutters drunk bellowing obscenities at the police and telling their low life mates how tough they were. Thank God for the men & woman of our armed forces.
