you don't have a 79 ford explorer, but it sounds like you are either extremely low on transmission fluid or you lost your transmission

You mean a Ford Bronco, right? Anyway, I'd say either the transmission is blown(which means a totally re-build), OR you have NO transmission fluid in the transmission which again means a rebuild.

i just would like to point out that
a: in 79 the word "explorer" was used as a trim desegnation, like XLT is now.
b: in 79 all the vehicles that bared the badge "explorer" were trucks, not cars.

trans is out and it's a ford bronco low fluid you would have drive not reverse because reverse takes more pressure to engage than drive does
