Martin Lapointe is still playing hockey? LOL. He hasn't even crossed my mind since Boston signed him to what was a ridiculous deal back in 2001, I think it was 5 years for 25 million. I remember Montreal being ticked off because they as much (maybe more if I recall).
I see he scored his 1st of the season tonight.

What contracts do you back on and say, what the heck were they thinking? I can think of several others but let's hear yours.

Vincent- I think the DiPietro contract was a good one. The Yashin one is on my list though.

As much as I crap on the Vanek contract and it is ridiculous that he makes that much money, I think it is still too early to be too judgemental on it. Sabres win the cup and he excels winning the Conn Smythe, VERY unlikely I know but anything is possible. Their hand was forced too, their own fault that it was but it still was........can't believe I am actually defending Vanek. I guess my point is that I don't disagree but the jury is still out on that one so it is hard to call it the worst when it is only 6 months in AND the 10 million is just this year (front loaded), and is 8 million next year then 6.4 for 5 years, so it is conceivable that he "could" be a bargain for the last 3 or 4 years of that contract, assuming he becomes a top 10 player and all the rest are making 12 million at that point.

I'd like to nominate the $100,000 over 5 yr contract that Frank Selke gave to an unproven Jean Beliveau in 1952

Beliveau won ONE Hart, ONE Ross, and ONE Conn Smythe.

As the highest paid player in the league....I would have expected more

Anybody else agree?

Benny P
- Yashin didn't bail out to Europe.....the league exiled him there.

You're not going to believe this but those were the two I was thinking of (and Valeri Kamensky)...........but I wanted to be humourous this evening.

I still think the Sabres signing Vanek to that ridiculous contract was a huge mistake. I realize that after Briere and Drury left the lineup didn't exactly look as hot without our two best players, but come on, making Vanek the highest paid Buffalo sports player ever is just crazy. nobody is worth that much cash, even if they had to match the offer that the Oilers sent to him. luckily we still have a quality team under the salary cap.

and how about those Islanders a season ago. they were a mess! they sign Yashin to an extension, he bails to Europe, and makes out like a bandit. then they pay Smith a to play for half a year to get them into the playoffs and lose. not to mention they signed dipeitro till he's like 50. very silly bargaining they made not too long ago.

Alexei Yashin signed a 10 year deal with the Islanders that they just bought him out of the last 3 or 4 years of.

Then the Islanders sign Dipietro to a 15 year deal for 67.5 million.

I grew up watching the Isles win 4 cups and get dethroned by Gretzky and Co. They just haven't been the same since.

i replaced into born in 1991 too and my first memory of hockey is going to a rangers game at madison sq. backyard, even although now i'm an excellent Flyers fan. i replaced right into a rangers and devils fan as quickly as I lived in Connecticut from 1991-2000 after which we moved to Pennsylvania in 2001 and that i've got been a Flyers fan ever considering. i think of i began out playing hockey whilst i replaced into approximately 7 or 8.

Don't get me started on Alexei "Cashin" Yashin, Bob. It wasn't even the contract they bought out from him, it was what they gave up to get him in the first place (Chara and their 2001 1st round pick, Jason Spezza). Then he happily goes off in exile to the Russia Super League with 17.6 million dollars( 2.2 per for eight years).

Alexi Freakin' Zhamonov with Boston. It's somewhere between $4m to $6m per and they got ten games (1-9-10) out of him. I think he still has one year after this year. You are correct on the Martin No-Pointe's Boston contract. He was getting more than Thornton at that point.

Is your picture of the late Pelle Lindburg? I remember when he passed in 1985.
