I actually did similar things many times to different girls when I was in high school. The reason behind, now I think it as follows:
1, I was very sensitive and passionate guy back then. So I always want to be accountable, useful, show up every time if she need me. However,
2, I have low ability in judgement. I can't tell (until now) who likes me or not, unless they yelling I love you in front of my face. I think he's the case too. He didn't judge your need very well.
1 girl did this for me:
She looked at me, firm eye contacts, and say, "Please leave me alone. I do not like you". Then I got the my judgement right.
Another girl did this for me:
She cried and looked hopeless, say I scared her. Then I stop. I really felt bad and guilty because I want bring happiness to her life not tears. So I left.
Be cold and let him feel you freeze everything around him. ;)

Do you like him is the question too? If you don't then ask him why he keeps following maybe he does like you, but just don't totally crush his heart. If he does say he likes you and you don't then say I'm sorry I do like you as friend and all but nothing more. Your a sweet guy and I bet you could find a girl that likes you back. Don't be too harsh on him if you don't like him cuz he's totally gonna be crushed. He may be annoying but don't be mean to him and tell also that I know that fact that you like taking me to my classes and talking to me, though it can get on my nerves, and its still nice, but you don't have to and you can do it sometimes but I still wanna hang out with other friends. I hope no hard feelings I do like you as friend. You know something like that... Good Luck!

Break it gently, tell him he,s nice, you like him bla-bla but you really dont have to spend every free moment together. Tell him you need time for your girls and him for his friends so meeting after school and occasionally for lunch and between classes is healthy enough. Assure him that you are not dumping him. Just be gentle. You never know when you may need him.

just be honest and straight with him, he may hav read signals wrong, but the more you let him walk you to class all the time the more he is going to get the wrong idea, you could talk to him and say look you think you hav been giving the wrong idea to him, you value his friendship and thats all you want, cos you dont want to lose him as a friend.

Don't be uptight. If he wants to hang out be grateful. If you hang out with other people also they can talk to him and take the load off...I usually visit relatives only if I can take other relatives to do the talking.
