Writing courses?

Question

I live in atlanta and i'm trying to find a writing course outside of a university or online to polish my writing skills. Have any ideas or should i just take some classes at a local college. I didn't want to do that because most require u get a degree. I already have 2. i just need to take a english course and maybe creative writing class or playwright course. and suggestions.

I don't know how many of these are good I can't afford all of them, but I know they are there.

Several colleges and junior colleges have writing courses on line. If there is a Junior college nearby most have creative writing as continuing education or allow anyone to take any classes they want to.

Local libraries have writing groups that will help critique. How much help they are varies widely by the level of leadership.

Unless you need the discipline to help, a writing course will not help you in a university. The classical quest form hasn't been taught in academia since the 1960s. Instead, creative writing courses focus on the metaphysical and ideas such as gender identity, author intent, etc....

I recommend that you find a group of writers (or those who want to be writers) and meet with them. Also, there are lots of websites that focus on classical storytelling that academia negelcts. Visit them and read the tutorials. Also, if there's only one book that I could recommend, I'd recommend that you read "Story" by Robert McKee. You'll be way ahead of the pack if you read that and you'll learn a lot.

Syd Field's screenwriting course on DVD is available at http://www.finaldraft.com. You can also find excellent books on writing through Writers Digest books. The most helpful I've found has been the Fiction Writing Series.
