People seem to miss the point that random massacres at schools and malls etc (Columbine, Dunblane, Hungerford to name but a few) are almost invariably carried out by licensed gun owners, not career criminals. Having been to the USA many times, it never fails to amaze and appall me that guns, and machine guns in particular, can be bought legally and easily. Why the fu ck would anyone need a machine gun? It isn't used for hunting, it's used for ONE THING ONLY-to kill people. The nutters of the NRA and gun enthusiasts all over the world should ask themselves deep down why they shoot at a silhouette target of a human during target practice. The mere fact that anyone wants to own a gun should be proof enough that they are not fit to own one.

You can't take away the guns that criminals have so it would never work. I'm not scared of your average Joe with a license and training in the care and handling of a gun I'm afraid of gangs and crack heads with a gun. They won't give them up without a fight and many people would be killed. Anybody can buy a gun if they want it bad enough. That will never change. How would you lead by example if not everybody is on board for it? It's a wonderful dream but that's what it is a dream.

NO! but it is time the United States started minding it's own business. If other nations want gun control, let them do it on their own, and we in this country sure don't want England, Canada and Australia telling us how to make our own laws.

The U.S. pro-gun lobby is far too strong for any willingness to change, even though there is strong support from the U.S .people.
It is also probably too late to control guns in the US but then you have to start somewhere.
Meanwhile us British "pansies" were lucky enough to have gun control from the early days, even though we still have gun problems in some communities, so it's not perfect, but it's not in our mentality to need to carry a gun, because generally most other people haven't got guns either.
Edit: I don't suppose the gunmen involved in the various School, College, shopping mall shootings etc. were "pansies", probably real tough guys.

If the yanks want to shoot themselves (as a basic human right) then why stop them? The meek will inherit the earth.

I think so, since we're evidently too stupid to initiate any ourselves!
I've no idea why so many Americans claim that "Our way is better"; there's no arguing with statistics. Europe, Canada, Australia, Japan (all of whom have gun control laws in place) all have gun-related violence that is a tiny fraction of what we have in the States. It's absolute insanity.
The majority of Americans actually favor having more gun control than we currently have (admittedly, not much) but here, the squeaky wheel gets the oil; and in this case, that wheel is the NRA. Our cowardly politicians tremble in fear of them and their nonsensical "every American citizen has the right to own an RPG launcher" approach.
Edit: Misty I'm packing my bags, but I still need your Irish passport GF! ;)
