The DNA is in the form of chromatin (loose and not condensed or wound up) during interphase and early prophase, as well as late telophase. During the other phases of mitosis (later prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and early telophase) the DNA is in the form of chromosomes, wound up and tightly condensed into an indentifiable form.
