A polygon is a closed 2-D shape formed by a specific number of straight lines connecting points in the plane. In a simple polygon, the lines may not cross each other.

A polygon will always have:
1) An equal number of edges (sides) and vertices (corners):
2) The sum of the interior angles of a polygon is always (n−2)180 degrees.
3) The sum of the exterior angles of a polygon will always equal 360 degrees, regardless of the number of sides.

Polygons can be:
1) Regular (all sides and vertices the same)
or
Irregular (different length sides and/or vertices)

2) Convex (all parts "bulge outward")
or
Non-convex (parts of the polygon go inward, in otherwords you can draw a straight line that will cross in and then out then back into the polygon.)

There are other characteristics such as:
Equiangular, equilateral, cyclic, etc.

I suggest your read a Wikipedia article on Polygons...
