Need a little more information here...what are his hobbies?
You also didn't mention a price range.
I really like the suggestions on sharing time and memories... you can get calendar software fairly cheap, and make a family calendar that notes everyone's bdays and anniversaries in addition to the normal holidays...for the top half of the calendar, use photos of the people who have bdays or anniversaries or special occasions in that month. A friend at work showed me one she does every year for her family (she makes one and then takes the master to a Kinko's or similar place and has them print and bind--relatively inexpensive (about $7 each) and it looks really professional. But you could also bind your own.
My Dad was into golf (so golf gadgets or gift certificates to the courses he frequented were always appreciated--they can be used to buy equipment, food, rent carts, or for the greens fee), and he liked electronic gadgets and challenging games (both computer and board), so that was easy. Does he enjoy fishing or camping? If so, maybe some cool lures or a new tackle box or a "grub box" for camping, or a fishing hat or flak jacket. If he likes to read, maybe a book on a topic he enjoys, or a bookstore gift card, or magazine subscription (popular science, newsweek, national geographic, the wall street journal, forbes, readers digest, a car mag, sports mag, a motorcyle mag, a boating mag, a fishing mag, a camping mag, a golfing mag, etc... etc...); if he's into crafts or woodwork or making stuff, either some tools or a model kit (like the ship in a bottle or a model airplane or car, or a model kit to make some sort of remote controlled plane or car, etc...); if he's into sports, tickets to a game of his favorite team; if he's into opera or theater or movies, show tickets or a gift card for a movie theater or rentals--you could go with him and have father/kid time. My Dad loved movies too, and later in life preferred to stay at home, so one year, I got a nice ceramic popcorn bowl (he loved popcorn and sweets too! :) and filled it with different types of microwave popcorn, and boxes of "movie candy" (milk duds, hot tamales, junior mints, etc... and peanut brittle because that was his favorite!), and put in a card with a gift certificate to Blockbuster. There are lots of things you can do, depending on your budget and what he likes. Merry Christmas!

LOL Like you have not done that a dozen times so far.
You should take the time to find out something he really likes or wants but has not done it yet. People get a thrill, a huge kick out of people taking the trouble to really find out what they might want but have not bought it or done it yet.
Example:
Does he like to go out to eat? Then ask him for a recommendation for a restaurant for you and a friend. Go there and buy him a gift certificate. He should be happy you tricked him in a nice way because you did it for him.

It depends on what your dad likes.
A lot of my dad's favorite shows are no longer on air, so my brother and I tend to get him a season or two of a show for presents. We'll also buy him cds or old records.
When ever we do buy him gift certificates, I try to make sure that its to a store that will only sell something he likes. That way he doesn't end up buying something for everyone else with it.
But whatever you do end up getting your dad, just make sure to let him know how much you appreciate him and what he may have done for you.

If you have a dad like mine that has everything under the sun, then buy him something unique or give him a gift card.
I bought my dad a naval cleaning brush! Of course it was a gag gift, but he laughed so hard and it came with a card that said, "for you that has everything, but this!"

My dad "never needs anything". So I get him a gift certificate to a restaurant. He loves it.
