Thomas Hooker (1586-1647) was a Congregational preacher and a founder of Connecticut. He was born in Leicestershire, England. Because of his Puritan beliefs he fled to Holland in 1630. He moved to what is now Cambridge in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1633 and settled in as a pastor. But his liberal beliefs clashed with the conservative Puritans there. He thought that each church should be independent. He also thought that people had a right to choose their magistrates and decide what powers that they should have. Hooker left with his church members and settled in Connecticut in 1636.
