I have a work truck I recently got - great deal it was well maintained, however I noticed this quirk(?):
1998 4wd Chevrolet 1/2 Ton Pick-Up truck, Work truck, V-6 no options except ABS and airbags. When I turn the heater on the A/C compressor engages, and operates. The air is warm, no temp problem... this surely hurts my gas millage, and it just doesn't need to be on to me.

The dealership said that it is supposed to do that - they also lied to me about something else being a $300 repair when it was a $2 part, I just asked to see if they were truthful, so I don't trust their judgment. I think a switch is broken somewhere.

Defroster isn't on - the switch that selects where the fan blows doesn't always "move" the air like it should... turn it and the air moves sometimes, sometimes it just "backs up" and the blower blows, no air comes out anywhere - think the switch on the dash is the problem then?

I've heard when it does that its just ensuring that the A/C components are getting lubricated. Honestly I would worry about it I think it is designed to do that so all the parts for the A/C stay properly lubricated. Your lucky your truck even has an A/C our work trucks were built without the A/C settings and the two that have it our out of freon or something else is wrong with it.

This is normal operation when the defrostor, or any combination of the defrostor and floor heat is selected.

The idea is to help reduce moisture inside the cab, it helps remove the fog from the inside of the windows.

It is not some idea to lube the A/C system during the winter... It has a purpose.

A/C clutch should engage when in defrost mode, if it is on when in vent or floor mode, it could possibly be a low pressure switch not working properly ,it's not shutting the AC clutch off. (Low pressure switch should be on the accumulator)

I've never heard of one coming on with the heat. They are usually programmed to come on with DEFROST to better cut the moisture from the windshield, but have never heard of one coming on with heat when it wasn't on defrost.

its not good for the compressor to sit unused for long periods of time so the manufacturers design the controls to run the compressor with the heat on to keep it lubed and free.
