While it's true that tragedy does tend to make you stronger, that is usually when the tragedy is 'second hand' ... a person you love is killed or dies, perhaps. Those who are part of the tragedy, if they survive, frequently get Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I've been working with the police and fire department at 'tragedies' and other traumatic situations, and I have PTSD from that. I have been treated for it, but will always have PTSD, and must 'escape' when I feel it starting to get in the way of what I'm doing. Even just playing World of Warcraft can set off the PTSD ... too many 'people' in the landscape on screen, or too much killing with no way to escape. I was a ' flyer' ... I did hostage negotiations, and talked 'jumpers' off of bridges and tall buildings. I am EXTREMELY STRONG, with an 'extra high pain tolerance' ... but I also MUST ESCAPE if I feel the PTSD starting to 'shake me up.' I'm female, but I got into the 'flying' because I already had PTSD ... I didn't want others to get it, so I wanted to help.

The tragedy doesn't do it, it's how you react to the tragedy that makes you stronger or ruin your life.
A tragedy can make you see things differently and you grow in character. It can make you more understanding about how life operates by taking your eyes off yourself and putting them on someone or something else
Or it can ruin your life by making you bitter, revengeful, stuck in the injustice of it all

Depends on the person. Some people cannot get over a tragedy and become depressed, or phobic or worse. Others are able to take life as it comes and get through even the worst events. It's a matter of personality.

It depends on the person. For me it makes me stronger. If you can forgive and let go of pain and take the lesson you learned from it then you have gained so much. Doesn't feel like it during the outset of tragic events or mistakes made, but it does end up that way in the end. Just my thoughts.

Wow, what a question. Especially with the Omaha, NE reference. How can any sense be made of that? There were so may affected. Maybe some that were fortunate enough to walk away unharmed physically will re-evaluate themselves, the way they are living their lives and truly understand that tomorrow is not promised.

I believe where there is pain there is growth. So, I guess what doesn't kill you makes you stronger rings true with me.

It depends. But I know you never stop missing a mom or dad once they are plucked from life. I would refrain from saying hard and fast "be tough" slogans in a situation of personal loss. People will do what they can do. Hopefully, they'll be able to get on with life in a positive way after this.

*It is really up to us whether a tragedy will make us stronger or ruin our lives* If we live in fear life will pass us by!

You can let it ruin your life if you choose, or you can help someone affected by it and feel a sense of being a blessing to those who truly need you. This is difficult, but I know you can get through it, hang in there.

it depends....if you have an ability to cope with things, it'll make you stronger; if you cannot cope with the tragedy or gain some semblance of 'normalcy' then it will ruin your life....it's up to the person who it affects...
