Mount Saint Helens, along with the other mountains that form the chain called the "Cascades" in the northwestern U.S., formed from a small plate called the Juan de Fuca plate subducting eastward beneath the North American plate, creating a volcanic arc above the subduction zone. The Juan de Fuca plate is now nearly gone, but some of it remains off the coast of Washington and Oregon.
