There are two things a tank can do.
One, it's a mobile firing platform. It can put a gun virtually anywhere you want it on the battlefield. With the addition of armor, it also helps to protect both the driver and the gunner. When you add speed to the mixture, you have a very potent weapon.

Much of the work done on tanks in the last seventy years has been an effort to maximize both speed and armor. The big problem here is the weight. Armor weighs a lot. A tank that only travels 35 miles per hour can still be passed by a man on a horse.

Two, it can break through an enemy's line, and move around behind them and give them the "fire from the rear" that sends chills up a commander's spine.

These roles used to be performed by horse cavalry and horse artillery. In World War I, both of these were still employed, not because of armor, but because they moved faster than the tanks.

Horses were used in World War II as well, but largely for moving troops, the Germans used Horses for doing this, throughout the war, because the army that seemed to invent motorized warfare didn't have enough trucks.

The tank made it so trench warfare was useless. A tank can just ram right through 'no man's land'. That's why WWII was more about speed and manuevering.

Made trench warfare obsolete.. Against entrenched infantry with automatic weopons, the tanks were able to breach the lines....
