I agree - I think there needs to be much more regulations and anybody who wants to buy a gun needs to go through at least a few layers of background checking by the gun shops and some neutral third-party.

Also, outlaw gun shows and pawn shops who sell guns to anybody.

A few years ago where I live, a guy went to our mall and opened fire the day before Valentine's Day. He couldn't handle depression and he was obviously troubled with of personal problems and unrequited love. He opened fire in the mall and was eventually tackled by some bystanders and held until the cops moved in on him, and the cops put the mall and parking lot on lockdown for 3 hours - Nobody could enter OR exit there. I think the media plays a smaller role in these things. The main cause of these things is the nature of people, their ability to cope with problems, how others treat them, upbringing, and their environment....People do not commit these crimes because they feel enticed by the media. If people can't handle their mental problems and are made to feel and believe they are worthless or unimprtant and ridiculed or mistreated, they will believe it, and become violent, sociopathic people. People write suicide letters boasting of being famous or rememered only because they felt unloved and unimportant, and they figure that even a horrible exit will change that. But you cannot give ALL the blame to the media. The media is nothing more than an outlet. You cannot blame the guns. A weapon is not as dangerous as the shooter. Take away guns and we still have troubled, dangerous people who will find other means of killing. The REAL problem is how human beings treat each other and the mentality of some of those who get stepped on. When people stop treating human beings so callously, we might just have less of these rampages....Since there is no actual evidence that the media had motivated him to commit the crime, a lawsuit against the media would not be possible. If you tried doing that, you'd also have to go after those who helped to create the killer....Being famous is not really what these people wanted - they wanted to feel loved and wanted. When they didn't get that, they tried grabbing at being infamous....I wish I could have talked to him and let him know his life was worth something. I feel bad for him as well as those victims.

When I lived in the States, before moving to the Philippines, I always carried a gun everywhere that I went. Out this way all of the malls have guards who carry guns to protect the shoppers from those crazy-people. It's about time that all those Malls do the same thing back in the States.

When I read that my heart just broke for all the people that were killed and hurt physically and mentally. I cant imagine being in a mall having a good time with friends or family and having something so horrible happen. It makes me so scared to even go shopping now. There have been way to many angry people taking the life's of the innocent lately it makes me sick.

It's horrible, and I agree with you 100%.

Unfortunately, it's going to be difficult to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally unstable, when young kids can get their hands on them in or near their schools.

This is a horrendous situation, and I'm truly at a loss as to what can be done to prevent further tragedies like this from occurring. There has to be a way...

I cried my eyes out...Omaha is my hometown! I wish I had an answer why these public shootings by angry young men with guns are happening...it's becoming too common!! My daughter was born the same day the Columbine H.S. shooting happened..a day of mixed emotions..watching that unfold on TV right after bringing a new life into the world.

yes, indeed it is horrible,

There are a lot of mentally unstable people and and a lot of guns in this country. I guess the easiest thing you could do right away if you are paranoid is to arm yourself and go shopping. There is no quick solution. Other than I am glad he took him self out as I would rather prefer not to pay for his stay in prison with taxes taken from my wages.

I live in Omaha.
It was terrible, I was driving by at the time and my aunt was coming out of the Von Maur store just seconds before the first shots were fired. Our local news has done a great job of sticking to the story and NOT glorifying this mad man. If you want to make yourself famous then go out and do good deeds and help out your fellow man. NOTHING in this world is worth taking another life over. I am a man who lost his wife, his house, and his job last year and I would never think about going out and murdering innocent people just so that I could believe that I was somebody.

My prayers go out to the victims and their families and I thank everybody for their continued support and prayer for our community in this time.

The Omaha Mall shooting underlines a political lie that is pasted on the side of our law enforcement vehicles "To Serve and Protect." "Serve" is true, "Protect" is a lie. You might as well assume that carrying a big tub of popcorn is going to protect you (it might actually, since you could throw it as a distraction).

The folks at Omaha are eight more victims of truly evil people that will do and say anything to gain power and influence. The kind of evil people that think that the majority of the people in this country cannot be trusted to protect their own property and life from common criminals let alone from some nutjob who decides he needs to kill people for whatever reason (in the Omaha case supposedly anti-depressants were involved).

Happy little housewives all over America believe that good looking Marine's with tight gluts don't blow Iraqi kids away and that law enforcement will be around to save them when someone decides to strip them and their family of innocence.

Responsibility for tragedies like Omaha ultimately rest at the hands of the sensless ignorant masses who wander throughout America on autopilot waiting to be turned into Soilent Green.

I live in Omaha Nebraska. I used to work at Hollister, a few stores down from Von Maur, it makes me sad and confused because it is in a nice area of town, and everyone always goes to that mall. I heard about it well before it got to CNN or anything , and I just want to know who the victims were... :(
