In my part of the world a young person can't buy/watch a film like Gangs of New York until they are 18, but can drive at 17, after getting married at 16 - to the person they have been legally having a sexual relationship with since they were 15.

Is this screwed up or what?

Screwed up. It's things like this that got the voting age lowered to 18 from 21. Kids were feeling like pawns when they could be sent to a war they possibly didn't support at 18, but couldn't vote.

It is screwed up. There should be universal laws about these things so people really do know what's what. The age of consent laws in the US alone are different from state to state. That means fifty sets of laws about the same thing on one country. How dumb is that?

only one of those is a matter of consent.

the others are regulations on commerce or licensing requirements mostly.

completely unrelated.

you probably can't go to kindergarten when you are 45 either, (just to make up an example) for similar reasons, but that is not related to consent either, nor is it related to the age restrictions on any other matter.

yep... and here they can join the military at 17 and kill people, but not smoke or buy drinks until they're over 21.
