1. Opinion 2. Fact 3. Truth 4. Reality

How do these things differ in your mind? It seems to me that there is often confusion and misunderstanding between people stemming from a lack of agreement as to what these terms mean. What do you think?

When I was in college, every time guys got into a "discussion", some one would always yell, "Define your terms".
1. Opinion: what an individual believes about a situation.
2. Fact: something that is true and can be confirmed.
3. Truth: words that are written or spoken with out any pervarication.
4. Reality: what is not imagined or affected by drugs (mushrooms, LSD, whatever) or mental disease or physical misinterpretation [as when one is suffering from a hearing or visual loss].

I'd go with:

1. A person's view on a given topic (without regard to how much thought has been put into it)
2. Any tautology. In the observable world these do not exist, but in practice any opinion that has overwhelming consensus among those people who have put a large degree of objective thought into it may also be considered a fact.
3. [to an individual] An opinion which matches the individual's own opinion. Not to be confused with "fact".
4. The set of accepted "facts" which have been gathered from studying the observable world.

1. opinion- what you personally believe is right and will stand for

2. fact- is reality. what is going to happen, is happening, or has happened. all of everything that we can prove is a fact.

3. truth- harsh, bitter, and rare, the truth really doesnt come easily. the truth is the reality, and not the fact.

4. reality- the facts, with a little opinion stirred in. Its what we do every day. not all we do can be proved but it can be talked about, yes?

These four words are idealy pretty similar, and yet so different. thanks for making me think today!! lol :)

Opinion ... a person's thoughts or ideas about a subject.
Fact ... the EXACT HAPPENING during an 'event' or an unchanging artifact.
Truth ... a 'comparison' of opinions and the logical decision of 'what happened' during an event.
Reality ... the world we live in, including both the bad and the good.
My grandfather started teaching me 'critical thinking' when I was three years old. That is rarely taught any more, but I think that good critical thinking is REQUIRED to be able to define the terms you asked about ... and I know that my definintions are good, because they are basically the same definitions used in a court of law ...

I think that you are using "left brained" and "right brained" wrong. Those two terms do not relate to political persuasion but on creativity vs. objective analysis. But for a definition of hard work, I would classify it as an honest day's work. In other words, work that your employer pays you for, not taking advantage of your fellow man nor oppressing the poor. It would be analogous to what used to be called the Protestant work ethic Cheers! ©2010 SinisterMatt. All Rights Reserved.

Nice thing about language, it requires definition, as in, codified. Up means towards the ceiling, and not blown out of the water by substance abuse. The bad thing about English, is that all the words seem to have multiple meanings, so it's not in granite, but it's as good as we can get it. English lends itself to unsupported beliefs, and edge of an opinion is rooted in a definition which does not, but could , have any relationship to reality. Reality, what a concept. Reality on the other hand exists regardless of what language is used to define it. Reality doesn't care. Reality does not require a language to understand it, and it does lend itself to direct knowledge, no definition, but total understanding. Reality can be bent into a fact. Facts require Truth, but facts can be lied about, and the lie can still be truth, just difficult to define, or believe, the walking dead of some religions comes to mind. Treated as truth, but violates the fact of the matter. Truth can be self-explanatory, complete, and easily understood without any facts to explain with opinions, and reality will not change regardless of what language you use to express the confusion resulting from worthless facts, supported by false descriptions of reality. Come on in the waters fine. See what I mean.

I have only opinions to offer and I feel these are not good enough for you but here goes.

Opinion is an abstract
A fact demands proof.
Truth is beauty
Reality is as good as the paper its printed on.

To be honest I have little faith in all of them.

Fact, Truth and Reality can be proven.
Opinion - is just that -- a person's opinion of an issue.
