The manger, used for a crib as depicted in art, was just a barred rack for animal fodder that looked like this:

You can fill a rectangular box with straw for a manger. If the straw is overflowering, it adds a more realistic touch. "You could always cut down a shoebox and splay out the sides, laminate the inside and outside with wood pattern shelf paper. By the time you put in the hay and arrange hay on the outside, nobody will know it's shoebox."

Other Nativity scene ideas:
We used 2 x 4's to frame it up on the back and sides, Then used a piece of particle board on the top for the roof. cover it with plastic on sides top and back, using a staple gun tack it down tight. Get some clear silicone and squirt it all over it, smear it with a paint roller or something.. Cover it with hay.. It cost-ed under 50.00 and less then 2 hours.
