If the 5% of Americans who own 95% of its wealth weren't so intent on hoarding it, it would be totally possible. I'm not a socialist and I don't think that our society should be paying third generation welfare recipients, but the people who need help should get it. I understand that in the last presidential election, 700,000,000 dollars was spent by just the 2 major candidates. Don't you think a few people could be fed with some of that money? The money we spend to destroy the Cradle of Civilization could also be utilized in some humanitarian way. Perhaps we could circumvent the AIDS pandemic in Africa. We need to adjust our priorities. On a scale of 1-10, 10 definitely!

Closing of the local manufacturing plant or key business in your locality, a natural disaster or catastrophe illness can put you in poverty overnight. There are few or no safety nets.

The safety nets are:
charity and Emergency Rooms.

Many Americans are 1 to 3 paychecks away from being homeless.

So, do you think we need some socialist (!) programs?

In otherwise, as long as you can make it as a wage slave, you shouldn't be complaining.

Sounds like you are tolling the death bell on the American dream.

Is opportunity increasing or decreasing for average Americans?

Do you think cradle to grave debt is acceptable? Borrow a hundred grand to go to college in order to have a chance at beating out some immigrant for a semi-decent paying job, then put yourself in debt for the rest of your life to pay for an over priced house. You and your spouse will have to work more and more hours, hire others to raise your children, and spend your free time doing the things that the non-earning parent used to do.

Such a deal.

with 10 being the most avoidable, I would say avoiding poverty is a 9. with 10 being the most unnecessary I would say social programs are an 8.
