From an evolutionary stand point, here's where I would guess the answer lies. Some animal (probably a dinosaur precursor) incubated it's baby inside it's body. Eventually it began pushing the embryo outside it's body to incubate and eventually developed the ability to put a hard shell around the embryo. All of these steps would have had to give the animal a better chance to survive (as well as the babies) or the trait would not have survived.
In this sense, you could argue the egg came before the chicken because the animal that we now call a chicken would have been born/hatched by another animal that was not quite a chicken.
But from an evolutionary stand point, the egg came along as way to help species survive which would mean the animal came before the egg.

I maintain the egg came first for several reasons, the ancestor of the chicken was laying eggs before man named anything a chicken.
The first chicken came out of an egg, neither the parents of the first chicken were themselves chickens.
The only way a chicken could have come first is if it was created without an egg.

well here's my theory
creationists believe the chicken came first because in the Bible it says God put the animals on the earth, so thus the chicken came first
evolutionists most likely believe the chicken is a descendant of another animal back from pre-historic time, which in a way is the egg coming first, if you get what I mean. But in a way that could be the chicken coming first?!!!? Hmm...

I keep telling people this. The accepted answer is that while the egg is a potential chicken, the chicken is an realized chicken. So the chicken comes first.

A chicken and an egg are laying in bed. The chicken is stretched back smoking a cigarette with a very satisfied smile across his face. The egg is frowning and looking extremely frustrated.
The egg says, "Guess we answered that question."

The chicken comes first. Like all beasts not every animal lays eggs, so the animal or beast has to come first. Also you need warmth for the egg to hatch so of course the chicken has to come first.

I think the egg, cuz chickens supposedly descended from dinosaurs. I'm guessing they slowly evolved over time, and when a dinosaur layed an egg, out came a chicken

i would say the chicken because if there were no chickens around when the egg was made...what made it. And then this chicken produced more eggs!
