I would guess the only way is to type that paper into the site(like turnitin.com) and then see. But wouldnt that take to much time?

Well first of all, they'd suspect you for plagiarism...
Usually teachers know your writing abilities...
So once your suspect, I'm sure they'll take the time to type down a portion of the paper on-line...
Sites that check for plagiarism don't require the entire paper to be submitted, just part of it.

Teachers weren't born yesterday, they are pretty smart and they have already gone through college having to do research and give references to tons of papers. Based on the expected skill level of a student, it is not too difficult to figure out plagiarized work. Best idea is to simply give credit to the person where you got the information from and you are covered, unless the assignment was to "do your own work".

All they would have to do is either scan the original and convert it to a text file, or just get online and search for some text from your paper. If you plagiarize, chances are you will get caught sooner or later.

It's easy...just type in a couple sentences, and it takes you straight to the website that the student lifted it from.

how do you know if they check papers like that? they might just have read something similar to whatever you put on the paper and could just assume that you are plagiarising

They can probably type in a paragraph or just a part of it and search for it.
