or trade for top players in their prime ...which to me shows that they are really serious about winning championships? and why on the other hand do other baseball teams claim to want to win championships, are in a big attendance market and make a lot of money, but never get the top available talent but would rather sign say a 32 year old aging outfielder who is on the decline for a 5 year contract, while we all know full well that more than likely his production will be dropping off significantly in the next couple of years and that he may be retiring before his contract is up?
To me, even though you pay more with the first option, but you actually get way more for your money in term of production, longevity, efficiency of contracts, and attendance draw.

Why be relatively cheap and buy a short term lemon when you can spend a bit more and get the real deal that will last a long time and will get your fan base excited and spending more?

Some owners put certain levels of profit ahead of winning. These owners are not driven to field a winning team but rather make money from the baseball operations. Unless they change their priorities they will never have a contending team.

Some owners would rather make a profit instead of spending the money and
making the necessary moves to put together a good team. Also don't forget there are some great players who have played well into their mid and late 30's. In most cases I agree with you, but you don't always get the opportunity to get a Arod or a Roger Clemens at 32 or 33 who will continue to produce at a high level through out their careers. If its a surefire hall of famer you're going after and it doesn't hurt your team i say you do it because if you have a mediocre player playing that position like a Scott Kamienicki or a Sterling Hitchcock If you can get a David Cone ,Roger Clemens or David Wells who are real upgrades you do it.

1. The Mets signing Frankie Rodriguez should give them about 10-15 more wins, if they get a better 8th inning guy it will give them 20 more wins at least. 2. CC will end up with the Dodgers. 3. No, but in the long run I see Manny Ramirez signing with the Mets. 4. I would love for the Mets to sign Manny Ramirez. 5. CC Sabathia will be the next big name free agent to sign. 6. Derek Lowe is the best free agent starting pitcher besides CC. He is an innings eater, gets tons of ground ball outs and has a low ERA. He is a solid number 3 or even number 2 starter in a rotation.
