I would love to use Bijou (bee-zhu/bee-juu, French for jewel), as it was my grandmother's name and we were very close.

However, whilst it means a great deal to me, I have been given quite the look by many friends when I tell them about the name -- according to them they've seen more dogs and cats with the name than actual people; thus, I've become hesitant.

Opinions?

I love the name Bijou!
It sound very sophistocated and because it has such a special meaning for you I think you should keep the name or at least use it as a middle name
It's unique but not crazy.

I LOVE IT! I have all B kids and this last girl was almost Bijou. Still in the running for future girls too...

Here are my kids and some other B names

Blaine Gregory
Briar Rosemarie
Bellalicia Joanne
(pronounced Bell-ah-lee-see-ah)

Boyd
Bentley
Blythe
Bijou
Bianca

Unfortunaley after I named baby 3 Bella for short I met a ton of people with dogs with that name, but her name is just a nickname anyway, i decided I didn't care, Bella means beautiful.

Isn't Bijou also a perfume?

Normally I advise against difficult to spell and pronounce names but if you have a family reason for using it then go for it. It's a nice sign of love and respect for your grandma. But don't get upset when everyone pronounces it incorrectly and needs you to spell it. As someone with a strange last name I can tell you that having to constantly correct people is less than fun.

Oh dear, I *do* know a dog named Bijou!

It's a sweet name, but I think I'd either name her Jewel - which keeps the spirit of the name - or use Bijou as a middle name.

Your friends are rude! Don't cave into the peer pressure to give your daughter an over-used name like Emma, Hanna, Emily, etc. It's not like you chose the name randomly, to be "different." It was your GRANDMOTHER'S name! My mother, Lillian, was named after her grandmother as well. Bijou is a lovely name for a baby girl.

My honest opinion? If I had a name that meant as much to me as it seems this name means to you, I truly wouldn't care what other people thought and I name my child that very special name.
Your friends are very rude and ill-mannered - especially if they know the reason and meaning behind your choice.

Do you really love the name? If yes, use it and be proud!

By the way - it's a very beautiful name!

Before I read the whole description, I was going to say "it might be hard for people to pronounce." It would sure be an original name though. It's nice.

Very different. I've never heard of it before, so I'm still not sure if I like it or not. It has a ring to it I guess. I say use it; it has very special meaning to you and a little girl is like a precious jewel so why not?

If you're still not sure yourself, try it as a middle name.
