Would you be alright if someone you typically exchanged gifts with gave you a card saying they donated in your honor or would you prefer a gift that you would use or want.

Due to over- commercialization and the resulting materialistic pressure to buy expensive items...I would not object to receiving a card saying that a donation had been made in my honor.
In this day and age our society is inundated with stuff. It contradicts the origins of the holiday season in the first place. It would be comforting to know that someone else had been helped through a donation to an organization for the needy or the environment.
Things and items are nice but they lose meaning and necessity after awhile. There are people going hungry and without clothing or shelter, living in war and poverty, and our environment is slowly being done away with. Preserving it and giving someone less fortunate a hope in life is more important.

Both! Seriously, some charity organizations have arrangements with retailers where a portion of your purchase will go to charity. As an example, Amazon.com has a great affiliate program where, if people link to the site through the charity organization's specific link, Amazon will donate a small percentage to that organization.

I speak from first hand experience. The German Shepherd Rescue Group I volunteer for has such an arrangement with Amazon. So, I send my friends the link to our rescue groups website, they go there, link in to Amazon, make their purchases, and our rescue group gets a small donation from Amazon. Everyone wins.

Charity all the way. Our family exchange has become a simple exchange of money and I would rather see those dollars go to someone who needs it.
