Technically it could be x or -x.

You see, sqrt(x) typically has plus and minus values. If you use the same value for the two sqrt(x), plus or minus, the answer will be x. If for some reason, you use one positive, and one negative, then you get -x.

sqrt(x) sqrt(x) = x^(1/2) (x^(1/2)) = x , remember you add exponents in multiplication.
