Alpherbetically it takes a bit of time to put them in that order, but it saves much more time in the long run when you are looking for an artist.
It really isn't hard provided you know the alphabet , and if you don't it wouldn't help much, but could help to teach you the alphabet.
All you do is take one at a time, and put it in order with the others previously put in order. If the first one is Blondie, next one is Shania Twain ( you will have to decide if you use first or last names in your system) the Shania goes under the Blondie, next one you pick up is Beatles that goes on top of Blondie, easy really.

It's not a problem when you have 50. It is more of a problem when you have 400. I could never find anything so put them in alphabetical order of performer (plus a separate shelf of compilations).... only to find I had duplicates of 3 different CDs!
The alphabetical system works fine until you start buying new CDs. You end up having to move every shelf along to make space. Then you run out of shelf space anyway and start a random heap ... so you still can't guarantee to find what you are looking for. But for that short period when they are all sorted out, it is SO impressive to be able to go straight to the one you want.

Yes, into specific artists. Starting with a certain artists earliest album to the latest one, followed by singles. I have a large collection of over 500 albums, so i had to do something! I have over 500 albums which consist of just over 23 artists... how about that for taste!!!

My CDs are organised alphabetically.
But then, I have around 1,000 and I need to know what's where, to avoid buying the same one again!

I just sort it into artists, without regarding alphabetical order. I figure they'll get out of order anyway, so why bother?
