The most wear and tear that happens to a computer happens as you turn it on. That first jolt of current through the power supply is what does it. Also, when you start us a computer it pretty much goes through a whole checklist of installed parts (ports, drives, cards, etc.) testing them out to see if everything is working fine. That puts a lot of extra strain on the hard drive because there are parts of the drive that just never really need to be scanned because you never use that application (like the drivers for my firewire port that I have not once used in my life). When you start up your computer you are doing more than just turning the power on and it is ready.
Just like with an automobile, where most of the wear on the engine occurs as you turn the ignition. I only turn my computers off when I will be away for a day or more.
Obviously the guy who wants good reasons not to leave your television and coffee machine on at all times hasn't a clue and should stick to answering questions that he knows anything about.
As far as energy costs go, if you have your monitor turned off, or it is in sleep mode, then your computer being on and doing nothing doesn't use all that much more electricity than you use by leaving your microwave plugged in at night displaying the time.

I turn if off unless I'm downloading a massive file where I will leave it on and start the download on the way to bed. I'm in the biz and ever since I replaced a PSU on a customers computer that had a fan caked up with dust lock up setting the PSU on fire I don't like leaving it on when I'm sleeping--plus--I've gone green. I've worked on 100s of computers in my days and NONE of my repairs had anything to do with the owner either turning it off or not when not in use. "It will last longer if you leave it on 24/7" is a bunch of BS.

I turn mine off at night. I used to leave it on, and put it in standby, but a severe thunderstorm and lightning caused my computer to go off and back on and off again, and when it did that, it interrupted XP's cycle of saving its settings when it logs off. That caused a BIG problem requiring me to reload XP. I was able to save a few things, but lost most of my files - years of work. I learned the hard way to turn it off!

I leave my Macs on 24/7. It will go to sleep when I want it to.
Lakis: The reason to leave a computer on is to avoid the electrical surge the comes with EVERY start up. It will shorten the life of the machine.

The worst thing you can do is continually power cycle your CP. I only turn mine off when I will be gone for at least 8 hours.
Usually overnight.
Other than that, use Standby Mode to save a little electricity.

It is actually more healthy for your computer to leave it on. I only restart it when i install something new.
Now if your electric bill is an issue, then i would turn it off every now and then.
