Look into Mud or Musk turtles. They're the smallest of the aquatic turtles you can find for pets. They only get about 5 inches and could be kept in a 55 gallon tank.

I would go with a Mud Turtle, Musk Turtle, or Painted Turtle. For the most part, a 55 gallon tank with about 45-50 gallons of water in it would only support a single adult turtle of these types.

Most turtles will get too big, but take a long time to do it. Also turtles need dry areas to get out and walk, if your aquarium is all water, it will die.
