I highly doubt his mother would kill herself over something like that, she's probably trying to scare him. Tell your friend that he must do what's right for himself and his fiancee. That's all he can do, the way his family reacts is their own problem. They either accept it or not, but they will be losing out on that part of their son's life.

He can't change his parents thinking. They are set in their ways. I suppose they can't get married until they settle their religious dispute?

Well, there are several choices. The girl can try to truly understand his religion and convert.

Or they can keep their separate religions, and get married.

Getting married as different religions may be tricky but it can be done in a few different ways. The man and woman should respect each other's religions. They can have two ceremonies, one for each, or they can get married in the man's religion. It's customary for the ceremony to be of the man's religion with the promise of raising the children in his religion. Some religions would conflict with this, I'm sure, maybe some do not get along.

If he secretly converts to Islam, he risks losing his family. Blood is thicker than water. The family bond is stronger than a lover's bond, so the girl should prepare herself for the possible end of the relationship if it goes down this route. Doing stuff in secret usually ends badly...look at Romeo and Juliet for example.
