The 420 $ selling price of a television is $30 less than 3 times the cost. Find the cost .

$420= 3x-$30 use x to represent the cost
$30 + $420= 3x - $30 + $30 you add $30 to each side in order to get the 3x by itself to solve for x (what you do to one side of the equation you must do to both).
$450=3x now divide by 3 to get the x by itself.
$150= x after dividing by 3 on both sides you get x= $150
The cost of the television is $150

It's 30 dollars less, so
420-30=390

It is then 3 times the amount minus 30, so
390/3=130

The TV costs $130.00
