I paid my 1st month rent to secure an apartment, but I could not view it until I paid. After viewing the apartment it had plug-in space heaters instead of a furnace and I have an infant and a toddler so this would not have been safe. I didn't sign a lease or anything else and I found a new place. now they say my $ is non-refundable. How can I get my $?

If you never signed the lease, you can take them to small claims court and try to get your money back. The fact that they demanded payment BEFORE you could see the apartment should have been a tipoff that something was wrong.

If you gave a non-refundable deposit, you DON'T get your money back. NEVER, EVER pay anything without viewing the premises first. If they won't allow a viewing, keep walking and find another apartment.
