In order for it to use a light switch the wiring has to be set up that way [inside the wall]. The dimmer you can do without any electrical know how. You buy a dimmer switch from the store [like Lowes] and install it in place of the light switch.

You can get an under the counter light fixture that you screw into the ledge over your desk area. You can get a fixture that plugs into an outlet or one that runs from batteries. You have to drill a hole to pass the plug through to the outlet. (Just telling you that you have to make sure you drill a hole large enough for the plug to pass through. You have to have a fixture to have a light bulb, or get desk lamp. The desk lamps come in all kinds of cool designs. Don't forget the envirnoment and get a light bulb that isn't made the same way a regular one is made and will help save the ozone.

Buy you a dimmer switch from Lowe's or your local hardware store or Wall mart.
You will have to cut the lines on your cord to the lamp and put two lines going into the switch and two lines coming out of the switch. Then all you have to do is press the button to turn it on and turn the knob to adjust your light tensity.
