Click Start, click Run, type dxdiag, ok. Select Sound tab. If sound card and driver details are not there, you need to reinstall the driver. It should be in a CD that comes with motherboard or PC or w/ the sound card in case it is a PCI card type. If CD is gone, download a copy of driver from motherboard or sound card maker.

If you mean that you have re-installed windows then you will have to re-install the drivers for the sound card. You can either use the disk supplied with the soundcard or if it's a supported soundcard you can tell windows to look for it by clicking on start-control panel-add hardware and use the wizard to find the sound card drivers and most likely other stuff that needs setting up also.

I had that happen a while ago, my sound just disappeared. And no amount or restarting the computer would bring it back.
BUT...what I did end up doing if I remember correctly, I went online and found the driver for it. One reinstall/download and it was good as new! : )

pull out your motherboard's install cd if you still have it
on that cd should be a sound card driver, i suggest reinstalling it and rebooting
if that doesnt work go to the motherboard's manufacturer's website and look for driver's there
