I'm a musician considering playing for tango dancers. I would emulate Astor Piazzolla's music if I thought the dancers would like it. This would be much more serious music than I could ever get away with playing for any other kind of dancers. Take any track from any Piazzolla album: would it be a hit or a flop?

Personally, I have moods where I love dancing to Piazzolla, but we would both have to be on top of our game for it to work. I have to be a very good dancer in the moment to pick up on the subtleties of the music, and you have to be a very good musician in the moment to pull off all of his tricks.

In Yo Yo Ma's Piazzolla CD, I especially like the idea of dancing to the first and third tracks.

If an inexperienced crowd will be dancing to the music, don't try Piazzolla; go for di Sarli instead.

I like dancing to Astor Piazzolla's music. What do you mean by emulating? Writing something in similar style? Or just playing his music? I don't know if fomer would go too well - people have a lot of respect and love for his Tangoes. You have to be good.
There are different kinds of Tango music and Tango dancers. There are 2 non-overlaping (mostly) categories - Argentine and Ballroom. See who is your target audience.

I think you will find that most Argentine Tango dancers will enjoy it. But it never hurts to cover a wide range of music,

It would be even better if you create YOUR OWN style of Tango music and not just a copy of someone else.

I'm a big fan, but you should keep in mind that a lot of people dance International or American style rather than Argentine tango, and those require a strict tempo, as with some of Piazzola's earlier work but not at all like much of his more famous pieces.
